A First Attempt

As the semester winds down, the students have started work on their final projects. The task? To generate creative projects inspired and informed by the art of kyōgen! Despite the physical challenges of being bound to a digital medium, many of the students have chosen to work collaboratively – writing and rehearsing brands new plays.

Without giving too much away, these plays are amazing examples of using traditional structures and conventions to create art that reflects our present day lives. You’d be right if you guessed masks and video calling come up in the projects, but you might also be surprised to know that students have incorporated famous cartoon characters, cross-cultural encounters in Hawai’i, and even out-of-this-world mischief into their work! Other students have opted to pursue visual projects. Who knows, maybe some of their work will be featured during the production in the Spring?
