Nōgaku was originally performed on an outdoor stage, and even when brought indoors retained it original roofed architecture., with a secondary roof covering the entire stage and the audience seating area. Outdoor nōgaku stages can be still be found throughout Japan on shrine and temple grounds. The roof gets lower further upstage to help direct the sound outward.
